Slicing method
How the model becomes flat parts: parallel fins, stacked layers, a waffle, radial fins or fins along a curve.
- Parallel fins: slices standing out of a backboard, side by side. The backboard can be one board, slats or none.
- Stacked layers: slices glued on top of each other, lined up with dowels; they can be hollowed to save material.
- Waffle: two crossing sets of ribs joined by half-lap slots.
- Radial: fins round a central axis, held by slotted hub rings.
- Along a curve: fins square to an oval or circle, shaped by formulas (or shape buttons) for their length, height, twist and outline.
Options
- Spacing1 to 500 mm · step 0.5 mm
- The distance between parallel fins, centre to centre.
- Phase0 to 1 · step 0.05
- Shifts every fin along by this fraction of the spacing, to move where the slices fall on the model.
- Min fin0 to 200 mm · step 1 mm
- Fins lower than this are left out, so you do not cut slivers.
- Margin0 to 200 mm · step 1 mm
- The border of backboard left round the fins.
- Slat depth2 to 200 mm · step 1 mm
- How deep each backboard slat is when the backboard is made of slats.
- Tab depth0.5 to 50 mm · step 0.5 mm
- How far each fin's tabs reach into the backboard.
- Dowels1 to 12 · step 1
- How many dowel holes line up the stacked layers.
- Wall2 to 100 mm · step 1 mm
- The wall left round a hollowed layer. Thinner walls save material but make weaker layers.
- Spacing A3 to 500 mm · step 1 mm
- The distance between the ribs of the first family (A).
- Spacing B3 to 500 mm · step 1 mm
- The distance between the ribs of the second family (B).
- Fins2 to 360 · step 1
- How many fins turn round the axis.
- Hub radius1 to 1000 mm · step 1 mm
- The radius of the hub the fins start from. A bigger hub leaves more room between fins at the centre.
- From °-360 to 360 · step 5
- Where the fan of fins starts, in degrees.
- To °-360 to 720 · step 5
- Where the fan of fins ends, in degrees. 0 to 360 is a full turn.
- Hub width3 to 200 mm · step 1 mm
- How wide the slotted hub rings are.
- Guide W10 to 2000 mm · step 5 mm
- The width of the guide oval (or the diameter of a circle) the fins stand square to.
- Guide H10 to 2000 mm · step 5 mm
- The height of the guide oval.
- Fins3 to 600 · step 1
- How many fins stand round the curve.
- Spacing1 to 200 mm · step 0.5 mm
- The distance between fins measured along the guide curve.
- Outline W10 to 3000 mm · step 5 mm
- The width of the oval outline that trims the fins.
- Outline H10 to 3000 mm · step 5 mm
- The height of the oval outline that trims the fins.
- Plate border0 to 200 mm · step 1 mm
- The border of back plate left round the fins.
- Faces4 to 1000 · step 10
- How many flat faces the folded model has. Fewer faces are quicker to fold; more follow the model more closely.
- Tab height2 to 30 mm · step 0.5 mm
- The height of each glue tab; tabs on short edges are made smaller.
