Hinge Box

Cabinets, drawers, lamps and planters

Stand a box up as a cabinet with a door and shelves, make a chest of drawers, open the base for a lamp shade or a drain, and hang it on a wall.

  • Cabinet: choose a flip-top lid hinged on the left and turn on Stand it up. The base becomes the back and the lid the door; width and depth are the front of the cabinet and height is its depth. Dividers across the depth are its shelves.
  • Wall cabinet: turn on Hanging holes. Two keyhole slots go near the top of the back, so the cabinet hangs on two screws: the screw heads pass through the round ends, then it drops onto the narrow slots.
  • Display cabinet: give the door a rim and a clear window. Flap-door cabinet: hinge the door at the back, which is the top when the box stands up.
  • Chest of drawers: set Drawers to 1 to 4. The case stands on its side, open at the front, with a shelf between each two drawers. Each drawer is a small hinge box of its own with a front plate to glue on, and a knob or finger hole. A drawer's walls are lower than the case's, so they get their own hinge lattice when they need one. Drawers need a rounded shape, or a pill wider than it is tall.
  • Base opening: a round hole in the middle (about 10 mm for a lamp cord, 8 to 15 mm to drain a planter), or an open bottom with a rim, for a lamp shade or a sleeve. Dividers need a base, so an open bottom is left out when there are dividers.
  • Pendant shade: fixed lid with a lamp hole and an open bottom. Table lamp: a rim top, a cord hole in the base and a cut-out pattern on the walls. Always use an LED bulb in wood or card.

Options

Hole size2 to 500 mm · step 0.5 mm
The diameter of the hole in the base: about 10 mm for a lamp cord, 8 to 15 mm to drain a planter.
Bottom rim1 to 200 mm · step 0.5 mm
How wide the band left round an open bottom is, as on a lamp shade.
